4. Substantial Risk of Loss
Trading options involves substantial risk and is not appropriate for every investor. Options trading can result in the loss of some or all of your invested capital and may exceed your initial investment. Specific risks include but are not limited to: total loss of premium paid; assignment risk on short options; liquidity risk; gap risk; tail risk; correlation risk; and model risk. You should not trade options with money you cannot afford to lose.
5. Past Performance Does Not Guarantee Future Results
Historical performance — including the trade log entries published on this site — does not guarantee future results. A strategy that worked in past market conditions may not work in future conditions. Markets change. Volatility regimes change. The author may make different decisions in the future than were made in the past.
6. Hypothetical and Backtested Performance
Some content on this site may reference hypothetical or backtested trading scenarios for educational purposes. Hypothetical performance has many inherent limitations and does not represent actual trading. No representation is made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown.
7. No Liability
Under no circumstances shall the author, operator, or any affiliated party be liable for any loss or damage, including but not limited to direct, indirect, consequential, or incidental loss or damage, arising out of or in connection with the use of, or reliance on, any content published on this site.

9. Forward-Looking Statements
Some content may include forward-looking statements regarding market direction, expected price levels, or anticipated trade outcomes. 11. Options-Specific Risks
Options trading carries risks that warrant specific attention beyond the general “substantial risk of loss” disclosure above. These are not exhaustive, but they are the risks that recur in the strategies discussed on this site:
- Total loss of premium. A long option held to expiration with no intrinsic value expires worthless. The full premium paid is the maximum loss.
- Assignment risk. Short American-style options may be assigned at any time prior to expiration. The journal primarily trades European-style index options (SPX, XSP) where this risk is materially reduced, but single-name American-style options do carry it.
- Pin risk. At expiration, a short option that is approximately at-the-money may or may not be assigned. The resulting position can be unpredictable for a brief window.
- Liquidity risk. Some of the option chains referenced here (single-name LEAPs, low-priced stock options) have wide bid/ask spreads. Limit orders are required; mid-price fills are not guaranteed.
- Gap risk. Overnight news, earnings releases, or macroeconomic events can move an underlying through multiple strikes between market closes. The journal’s defined-risk structures cap this risk at the wing width, but the cap is real only at expiration.
- Tail risk. Black-swan-type events (market shutdowns, flash crashes, extreme volatility spikes) can produce outcomes that no historical backtest has captured. The journal sizes for the risk it can model; the unmodeled risk is real and uncompensated.
- Correlation risk. When multiple positions share a directional assumption (e.g., the entire book is short-vol on SPX), a single regime change can hit all positions simultaneously. The journal caps aggregate book exposure per playbook rules but cannot eliminate correlation risk.
- Model risk. The probability-of-profit, expected-move, and Black-Scholes figures shown on this site are model outputs. They are not guarantees. Realized outcomes deviate from model outputs in ways that the model cannot predict.
12. Tax and Regulatory Considerations
The tax treatment of options trading varies by jurisdiction and by individual circumstance. The journal does not provide tax advice. Specific points worth noting:
- SPX and XSP index options are taxed under Section 1256 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code (60% long-term, 40% short-term capital gains) regardless of holding period, which is a structural advantage for active traders.
- Equity options are taxed under standard short-term / long-term capital gains rules based on holding period.
- Wash-sale rules, mark-to-market elections under Section 475, and state-level tax treatment can materially change the after-tax outcome of any strategy described here.
- Traders in jurisdictions outside the U.S. face additional considerations. The journal’s author is a U.S.-based trader; the content may not apply to readers in other regulatory regimes.
Always consult a qualified tax professional before relying on any tax treatment implied by content on this site.
13. Sources and Data
The market data, option chains, IV calculations, and payoff diagrams on this site are generated from publicly available market data feeds and standard option-pricing models. Specific limitations of those sources:
- Live option chains can be delayed by 15 minutes or more, depending on the data provider’s terms of service and the user’s geographic location.
- Implied volatility values are derived from market prices using the Black-Scholes model with continuous compounding; real market IV may differ from the model output, especially in low-volume strikes.
- Probability-of-profit figures are based on log-normal terminal-price assumptions, which underestimate tail risk relative to empirical return distributions.
- Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Market regimes change.
